There are two different heights in the bull-brick series: 80 mm and 100 mm. The rubble stone provides an opportunity to maintain green areas for car parking (up to 3 tonnes). Positive features of crushed stone are that it helps to maintain soil functions and does not impede natural water circulation. It also improves the microclimate and acts as a filter. Crushed stone is a good choice for car parking areas that need both the cushioning effect of grass and the driveability offered by concrete paving. In squares, parks, walkways, where the architect recommends the use of grass paving, the design must provide for the possible movement corridors and point load locations of heavy vehicles (garbage trucks, maintenance equipment, etc.), and in these areas, the maximum possible load bearing capacity of the load-bearing foundations must be used.

Recommended installation sequence:

  1. Compacted substrate
    2. Geotextile if necessary
    3. Substrate – aggregate material
    4. Gravel or fine aggregate sand. 5. Marble 6. Soil in the holes in the crushed stone
    7. Sowing grass seed

Given the size and shape of the grass, it is particularly important that the substrate is very well prepared, strong and smooth, to prevent or minimise subsequent cracking under load. The substrate must be properly compacted, as the construction of the grass is such that it is not desirable to compact it after installation. At the installer’s own risk, and if unavoidable, use the lightest possible soil sealant with a suitable protective tray.

Soil to be placed in the holes in the rubble stone

After the lawn is laid, the holes inside the lawn are filled with soil and a suitable lawn seed is sown. There are two ways to install soil:
1 – The holes in the lawn are initially filled with dribble soil and, when sprinkled evenly, the soil is waited to sink naturally into the lawn edge. The soil surface on the trough should be 1-2 cm lower than the top surface of the trough, so that the part of the root collar of the lawn plants remains at the minimum height when trampling.

2 – The holes in the grass are mechanically pressed down 1 to 2 cm from the top of the lawnmower using a trowel or other suitable tool. In a pebbled stone, plant growth is ensured by leaving the soil surface below (about 1-2cm) the top edge of the stone, and by providing the minimum growing space and scorching area for plants. Grasses start to scorch after mowing and, given that the purpose of the grass is to create green space in areas of high use, it is important that the grass in the bedrock is left to grow. Tightly packed grass cuttings lack the air and space needed for plant roots to grow, resulting in plant death. This, in turn, translates into a boggy surface instead of green. They are also killed by the weight of the car and manoeuvres (turning the power steering wheels on the ground). However, if the plants are below the top surface, a very effective green area can be achieved if the right maintenance techniques are used.
